Richard Steinberg, AIF®

Managing Director, Partner

Richard joined HighTower in March 2012 after 10 years with the Private Banking and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch. Previously, he worked for 16 years with Goldman Sachs: 13 as a wealth manager and three as an equity research associate.
Richard is the senior investment strategist of the team, overlaying macroeconomic and capital markets perspectives on the qualitative and quantitative work of the team. His direct responsibilities include managing high-grade, tax-exempt fixed income portfolios for domestic clients, as well as analyzing and recommending alternative investments. In addition, Richard has had extensive experience covering hedge funds at Goldman Sachs.

Richard began his career in 1986 in the Equity Research Department of Goldman Sachs, covering healthcare companies and non-bank financial institutions. Prior to that, Richard graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a B.S. from Syracuse University with a concentration in finance and corporate law.

In 2009 he was named as one of the Top 1000 Advisors by Barron’s. In 2014, he was awarded Best Client Service (under $5B) from Private Asset Management magazine and named a Top Registered Investment Adviser by Financial Times. He was named a Five Star Professional Wealth Manager as featured in New York Magazine for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. As part of HSW Advisors, Richard was also named as part of the Financial Times Top 300 Teams in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Richard and his wife, Kathy, live in Tenafly, NJ and have two sons; one a professional ballet dancer and the other a freshman at Montana State University. Rich also holds a position on the Board of Directors for the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP).

Jordan Waxman, AIF®, CFP®

Managing Partner

Jordan joined HighTower in March 2012 after 10 years with the Private Banking and Investment Group at Merrill Lynch and eight years as a wealth manager with Goldman Sachs.

Jordan became a licensed Values-Based Planner with Money, Meaning and Choices institute and earned the AIF® Designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies in 2013. He specializes in tax, wealth transfer, philanthropic and estate planning, as well as in asset risk management. Jordan advises on the structure and execution of onshore and offshore trust solutions, and counsels on philanthropic planning issues and techniques.

Jordan graduated with an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business with a concentration in Finance and Economics. Prior to business school, Jordan graduated with B.C.L. and LL.B. degrees from McGill University’s Faculty of Law, and a B.A. (with honors) from McGill’s Faculty of Arts.

At McGill, Jordan was awarded the Scarlet Key for outstanding leadership in varsity athletics, politics and literature. He remains a competitive Ironman tri-athlete and marathon swimmer. At age 50, Jordan became the 99th person in history, and first Canadian male to complete the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming – the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim (2006, 2010, 2014), English Channel (2010) and Catalina Channel (2014).

Jordan is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Professionals and State Bars of New York and Massachusetts. He is a member of the Board of Directors of HighTower, Friends of McGill University, CollegeSpring, and the Board Emeritus of the Eli and Edythe Broad Theatre in Santa Monica.  He also serves on the Professional Advisory Committee of McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management where he co-teaches Investments for the B. Comm. Program and the Faculty Advisory Board of McGill’s Faculty of Law, where he teaches Estate Planning. He lives with his wife, Caren, and three children in Rockleigh, NJ.

Jordan has numerous peer and industry awards. In 2008 he was named as one of Worth Magazine’s Top 250 Wealth Advisors. In 2014 he was named a Top Registered Investment Adviser by Financial Times. In 2014 and 2016 Jordan was named to the Barron’s Top 1200 Advisors by State List. He was named a Five Star Professional Wealth Manager as featured in New York Magazine for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Alexander Bass, CFA®, CFP®, CAIA®, AIF®

Managing Director

Prior to joining HighTower, Alex spent eight years with Merrill Lynch Private Banking and Investment Group. He worked closely with the Senior Partners on the Private Banking team in determining portfolio structure and presenting investment recommendations to clients. In addition, he conducted investment and portfolio analysis and was responsible for investment due diligence on third-party money managers, with a particular focus on alternative investments.

He is a graduate of the University of Rochester with a BA in Economics.

Alex holds several professional designations, including Chartered Financial Analyst®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and Accredited Investment Fiduciary®. In addition he is a member of the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association®.

He enjoys outdoor sports and is a member of the Hudson Valley Orienteering club. He lives with his wife and son in Brooklyn, NY.

Peter Byrne

Managing Director, Partner

Peter joined HighTower in January 2015 after 10 years with the Global Wealth Management division at Merrill Lynch as both a foreign currency trading manager and as a Financial Advisor. Previously, he worked with Lloyds Bank of London in Toronto and Chicago, CIBC World Markets in London, and Bank of Bermuda in Hamilton, Bermuda and Luxemburg. In addition to Peter’s employment in London, Peter also worked as a Director for Citigroup Capital Markets in New York.

Peter draws on over 30 years’ experience in global financial markets. His specialty is in foreign currency exchange (FX) markets and wealth management with a concentration in complex portfolio planning. In addition, Peter specializes in advising to the unique needs of professional athletes.

A native of Toronto, Peter graduated with an MBA from the University of Windsor, Ontario with a concentration in Finance and Economics. Prior to his business school, Peter graduated with a B.A. in Economics from the University of Western Ontario. At UWO, Peter was a member of the Western Mustangs Hockey Team. He remains passionate about hockey and athletics at large.

Peter splits his time between New York and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He and his wife have two sons.

Candice Kakar

Managing Director

Candice oversees the business operations for HSW Advisors to ensure excellent client service for our clients. She is responsible for resource management, tracking performance and growth goals, and is involved with business development initiatives for the team. 

In March 2012, Candice led the transition to Hightower to move HSW Advisors’ business from Merrill Lynch. She started her career with HSW Advisors in June 2008 as a Registered Client Associate at Merrill Lynch’s Private Banking & Investment Group. Prior to that, Candice completed two consecutive internships with HSW Advisors as a summer analyst at Merrill Lynch. 

Candice graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a B.S. in Finance and holds Series 7 and 66 licenses.

She enjoys hiking, volleyball, snowboarding, surfing, travel and cooking. She currently resides in Hoboken, NJ with her husband.

Charles Bronstein


Charles brings over 20 years of financial services industry experience to HighTower, including five years with J.P. Morgan Asset Management and nine years combined with GE Capital, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. Charles has worked in various roles across Wealth Management, Investment Banking, Corporate Development, Alternative Investments and Capital Markets.  Charles' areas of focus for our clients are financial planning and investment counsel, alternative investments, capital markets, and portfolio construction and analysis.

Charles serves his lifelong passion for film by leading our team’s initiative as a signature sponsor for the 25th Annual Hamptons International Film Festival. He is affiliated with several charitable organizations, including Mt. Sinai Hospital, the American Cancer Society, and the ASPCA. Charles is also a member of the Aspen Institute. He is a native New Yorker and graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Charles is an avid golfer and enjoys skiing, tennis and playing piano and guitar.

Matthew Van De Merlen

Senior Financial Analyst

Matt Van De Merlen, Senior Financial Analyst, joins our team to lead client reporting and analysis, support our investment committee with manager due diligence & research as well as portfolio construction & management. He is a CFA Level III Candidate. 

Prior to joining HSW, Matt worked for the Global Investment Solutions (GIS) group in HighTower’s Corporate division, where he managed several product lines including Alternative Investments. He is a graduate of Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Matt also holds a Series 7 license. 

In his free time, Matt enjoys cooking, hiking, running, sports (baseball and football especially), and weightlifting. Matt currently resides in Manhattan with his wife.

Kendra Jones

Director of Client Service

Kendra supports our team throughout all stages of client service engagement, including new accounts, money movement, operations, charitable gifting and family office services. 

Before joining HSW, Kendra served as a Client Relationship Consultant at TIAA where she worked for 6 years. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in Pre-Law. Kendra also holds Series 7 and 66 licenses, as well as her insurance and annuity producer license.

Kendra enjoys traveling, hosting dinner parties, catching a Broadway play and visiting iconic New York City attractions with her twin sister.

Sigen Kotoni

Executive Assistant

Sigen is HSW Advisors’ Executive Assistant, and as such is the first point of contact among our clients and team members.  Sigen helps make excellent client-driven initiatives, team projects and strategies. 

Her previous paralegal and administrative experience complement her vast managerial and analytical skills. Prior to joining HSW Advisors, Sigen managed all operations and logistics for a downtown civil litigation firm. She is a New York University alumna.

Sigen is bilingual and is passionate about traveling, having visited forty-two nations. Her bucket list includes sky diving, writing and publishing a work of non-fiction, and exploring at least fifty-five more countries. 

She currently resides in historic Jackson Heights and is an Astoria, Queens native.
