DO YOU FEEL LUCKY?

In the 1950s, Frank Sinatra asked luck to be a lady. In the 80s, Madonna declared that she’d found her lucky star. And in 2013, Daft Punk were up all night to get lucky.

Musicians aren’t the only ones prone to pondering the mysteries of luck. At a time of year when we all hope to absorb some “luck of the Irish,” it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on how we respond to good and bad luck, and what that says about our personalities.

While the superstitious among us may believe we can influence our luck for better (finding a four-leaf clover, picking up a penny off the sidewalk) or for worse (breaking a mirror, crossing a black cat’s path), for the most part, luck is beyond our control. You can’t do much about the traffic jam you get stuck in en route to a job interview any more than you can set yourself up to win the lottery.

But do successful people make their own luck?

Some people have a natural tendency to embrace an adventurous spirit. They crave the adrenaline rush that comes from taking chances and risks, whether it’s bungee jumping or launching a startup (or both, if you’re Richard Branson). Others are more cautious and methodical by nature: makers of pro-and-con lists who prefer to rehearse their disasters and fully analyze a situation before proceeding.

Wherever you land on the spectrum between daredevil and play-it-safer—and there are strengths and weaknesses on both sides—the key to achieving your goals is to know your own personality and take that into consideration when making decisions. If you’re prone to leaps of faith, try pausing to imagine any unforeseen consequences. And if you’re a risk avoider, try not to let factors beyond your control discourage you from chasing a dream or pursuing an opportunity that could pay off handsomely in the end.

Oprah Winfrey says, “I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day—and may you be prepared for whatever opportunities lie ahead.
